The Friends of the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site has funded the purchase of 500 notebooks for use by 4th and 5th grade students as part of their field trip experience. The eye-catching cover for the books was developed by Friends member Eugene Estees.
This project is part of the Friends group on-going work to support the educational programs at the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site.
Ashley Burns, Education Technician at the Site, developed several curriculum-based writing prompts that the students can choose from after their visit to complete a post-visit writing activity to solidify their learning. The journals can be used to take notes, write down observations, for conducted activities during the field trip, or be given at the end of the field trip for students to take back to the classroom. They could also be used alongside some of the Park’s lesson plans, including a new lesson plan that goes with the new educational exhibit (also partially funded by the Friends group) in the Early Home on Andrew Johnson’s political career. Teachers were involved in reviewing the writing prompts.
